Why so many children stumble on column subtraction with borrowing
"Column subtraction with borrowing," which children learn in 2nd and 3rd grade, is one of the most notorious stumbling blocks in elementary math.
Take a problem like "134 - 67." When you can't subtract 7 from the 4 in the ones place, you have to "borrow" from the tens place — and that operation isn't intuitive for many children. It gets even trickier with a problem like "302 - 175," where the tens place is 0 and you have to borrow in a chain all the way from the hundreds place (chained borrowing). Even adults have to stop and think for a moment.
If a child is left stuck here, it affects everything they learn afterward — division, fractions, and decimals all build on it. Column subtraction is a key unit that supports the whole foundation of math.
The trouble is, the drills in a textbook only tell you whether an answer is right or wrong. They make it hard to see exactly where a child got stuck.
Three causes of stumbling — a view from the classroom
"Visual cues" and "small steps" are the two keys to clearing away these stumbling points. The reasons children get stuck on column subtraction with borrowing fall into three broad categories.
- 1. They don't understand what "borrowing" actually means
- They've memorized only the procedure — "cross out the top digit, reduce the neighboring digit by one, and…" — and do it mechanically without understanding why. The moment they forget the procedure, they freeze.
- 2. They get confused about which place to borrow from
- Confusion is especially common with chained borrowing (borrowing from the hundreds place when the tens place is 0). The two-stage operation — "I can't borrow from 0, so I have to go up one more place" — feels complicated.
- 3. They forget the order of the steps
- Column arithmetic is worked right to left — ones place, then tens place, then hundreds place — but children can get muddled partway through, skip a place, or forget to finish the processing after borrowing.
In fact, column subtraction can be broken down into eight stages.
Once you can pinpoint which stage a child is stuck at, you can practice just that stage intensively.

- Lv7 Chaining ── 3-digit, chained borrowing (tens place is 0, e.g. 402−153)

Lv1–2 have no borrowing, so they practice the basic form of column arithmetic (line up the places and subtract from the top down). Borrowing appears for the first time at Lv3, and the chained borrowing at Lv7 is the biggest hurdle.

Ideas for use in the classroom and at home
- Individually optimized learning
- A teacher can identify that "this child is stuck at Lv3 (borrowing once)" and have them practice just that stage intensively. Understand the mechanism in Detailed mode, then drill in Standard mode — this flow works well.
- Home study and self-directed learning
- Instead of a homework worksheet, tell them "do 10 questions on Column Math Challenge," and they can go at their own pace. Having them show the accuracy rate on the results screen to a parent is another nice way to use it.
- Use in special-needs classes

Advice for teachers and parents
To help grow a child's column-arithmetic skills, here are a few points worth keeping in mind.
First, focus not on "where they made a mistake" but on "how far they can go." If a child breezes through up to Lv5 but stalls at Lv6, you know their challenge is with 3-digit borrowing.
Detailed mode first, then Standard mode is the effective order. If you have them practice in Standard mode from the start, they tend to just repeat right and wrong answers without understanding the procedure.
Also, prioritize "solving accurately" over "solving fast." Once accuracy is steady, moving on to challenge their speed in Speed mode is a good progression.
