How we see color differs from person to person. Say to someone “red and green are hard to tell apart” and they nod — but what that actually looks like is surprisingly hard to picture. This is a guide, written for teachers and parents, to color-vision diversity: why it is closer to home than most people think, a free browser tool for experiencing it rather than just hearing about it, and how to put Color Universal Design (CUD) into practice in the classroom.
1 in 20 — color-vision diversity is closer than you think
Roughly 5% of Japanese men (about 1 in 20) and about 0.2% of women are said to have a congenital color-vision characteristic (per the Japan Ophthalmologists Association). In a class of 35, it would be no surprise to find one boy among them. This is not rare at all.
In Japan, routine color-vision screening in schools was effectively abolished in 2003, then reinstated in 2014 as an individual, opt-in check. But there are plenty of cases where neither the child nor the parents are aware of the characteristic in the first place.
When a teacher makes board notes or materials without keeping color vision in mind, some children can end up in a very hard-to-read situation — an important point written in red chalk that is hard to distinguish from the white-chalk text around it, or a red circle on a worksheet that dissolves into the background.
What matters is the accurate understanding that it is not that the person “cannot see color,” but that certain colors are hard to tell apart.
2. Why you need to “experience” color-vision diversity
How the world looks to a person with a color-vision characteristic is genuinely hard for others to imagine. Hearing the words “red and green are hard to distinguish” still leaves you unsure of what it actually looks like.
There are several types. Someone of the P (protan) type and someone of the D (deutan) type see differently, and the pairs of colors that are easy to confuse differ too — red and green, red and brown, pink and gray, green and orange.
The basic principle of Color Universal Design (CUD) is conveying information without relying on color alone. By also using shape, text, and patterns — cues other than color — materials and displays become clear for everyone.
Attending to visual accessibility, not only auditory accessibility, is essential to building an environment where every child can learn with ease. Every tool and game on SignCascade UD uses CUD-conscious color schemes.
3. What “The World of Color” is
“The World of Color” (いろのせかい) is a free browser tool on SignCascade UD. No install and no sign-up: you can try it in about three minutes from a phone, tablet, or PC.
It is made up of three mini-games, so you can get a feel for your own color-vision tendencies while you play.
- Game 1: Color Sort
- Rearrange color tiles into the right order. There are five challenges — the order of the rainbow, a red gradient, a green gradient, and more. It supports drag-and-drop and keyboard input, and shows your accuracy as a percentage for each round.
- Game 2: Odd One Out
- Find the one different color among tiles laid out in a 3×3 grid. The patterns relate to color vision — red-green families, blue-purple families, and so on. Your response time is measured, and when you miss, the correct position is highlighted.
- Game 3: Same Color?
- Two colors are shown side by side, and you decide whether they are the same or different. The questions turn on subtle differences in saturation and brightness.
Finish all three and the results screen shows a radar chart, giving your color-discrimination across four categories: red-orange, yellow-green, blue-purple, and brightness. Along with a star rating and an overall assessment, it explains which areas are your strengths and which you find harder.
One important note: this tool is not a medical diagnosis. The results screen itself states, “If anything concerns you, please see an ophthalmologist.” It is purely a tool for getting to know color-vision diversity experientially.

- Checking materials and worksheets
- Reviewing your own worksheets or slides after trying “The World of Color” plants a new instinct: “this red text — some people might find it hard to tell apart.” Small adjustments go a long way: mark with a double circle instead of a red one; add an underline rather than relying on color alone.
- Lessons in ethics and human-rights education
- Use it in lessons where children learn, through experience, that “people see differently.” After the whole class tries the tool, discussing “When might this cause trouble?” and “How could we make things clear for everyone?” deepens their understanding of diversity.
- Inspecting displays
- Pair it with an activity that inspects the displays around the classroom and hallway, and the children themselves become CUD practitioners — growing the ability to notice for themselves, “isn't this red text hard to tell from the background?”
- Linking with science and art
- Combined with the primary colors and the study of light in science, or color-scheme study in art, children can learn “the science of color” and “the accessibility of color” together.
5. Advice for teachers and parents
A color-vision characteristic is not a “disability” but a form of diversity. Rather than attaching a negative label, it matters to frame it positively: “people simply see in different ways.”
Just keeping the four basic principles of Color Universal Design (CUD) in mind changes a classroom environment considerably.
- Don't rely on color alone — also use shape, symbols, text, and other cues.
- Secure contrast — keep enough difference in brightness between background and text.
- Avoid hard-to-distinguish color pairs — don't place red and green side by side.
- Add the color's name — label colors explicitly in a graph legend.
As for the board, simply using yellow chalk instead of red dramatically improves legibility. Even against white chalk, yellow is a color most people can tell apart with ease.
